Spring 2020 Book Study: Practicing Presence
The North Country Reading Council, in collaboration with the St. Lawrence Valley Teachers' Learning Center sponsored an online book study in the early spring. The study was co-led by Dr. Marta Albert, Associate Professor at SUNY Potsdam and Kaitlin Baker, 6th grade teacher at Canton Central School. The book Practicing Presence by Lisa J. Lucas proved to be highly worthwhile for the participants in the book study. Participants expressed gratitude for this type of book that addresses potential stress of everyday experiences in the life of an educator and how to impose self-care strategies to relieve the stress load. The practical ideas in the book were viewed as highly valuable and participants felt they concluded the book study with a better view of themselves as educators and a tool belt of strategies for maintaining that view. With Covid 19 following on the heels of the book study, these strategies became even more relevant in dealing with the present work place demands! |
Explorations in Math Literacy
This book study was fabulous! We had 20 participants. Because we are living in a virtual world, we did weekly Zoom sessions where the presenter, Becky Duprey, Instructor, SUNY Potsdam, was able to share videos of actual running records and then discuss them with participants.
A Schoology course was established where there were several activities that can be used to support students after the running record is done. Each of the sessions were recorded and posted. During the last session, Ann Elise Record joined us. She works very closely with Dr Nicki Newton, the author of the book. Ann Elise was able to share more insight on using running records. It was a great offering and the same book study will be offered again in July using the same format sponsored by the local BOCES organization.
